The women in my family seem to have a gene that lies dormant until the age of 50.  At that point, something kicks in and we must travel. I saw this happen in my mother but, at the time, never expected I would find myself with the itch to hit the road (sadly, my grandmother passed away at 49 - which I guess you could argue is a way of travelling, especially given the limited options for women at that time).

And then I turned 50! Suddenly in the back of my mind far off places were calling my name.  I found myself risking whiplash as I drove past RV sales lots and lingering over pictures of rock formations, cliff dwellings and national parks.

So now I am hitting the road taking my knowledge of health, nutrition and functional medicine with me to hopefully educate and help as many people as I can. I'll be posting my adventures, thoughts on wellness, nutrition tips and travel schedule here.  Hopefully, you will find it entertaining and informative! Another Roadside Attraction

March 14, 2011
As I have stated before, the need for repairs never seems to come at a good time. In some cases, it comes at a very inconvenient time. Like on the side of the highway at 10:30 on a Sunday night. Such was the case when my other tire decided to meet its maker. I try to never travel at night for this exact reason. But I only had 90 miles to go, the last CD of my current book, and probably a little too much caffeine at Starbucks. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I had tried four different places to get a new tire for the other side after my recent flat tire incident. They are apparently difficult to find and no one had one. So I knew the clock was ticking and made careful inspection of the tire at every opportunity. It seemed up for the trip. I headed out on the highway and popped in my book CD; I thoroughly enjoyed the final 15 minutes (I did think there was much more). 40 minutes in the middle of nowhere, my rig began to shake, rattle and roll. Then thump. I knew immediately this was not a good sign. I pulled over as far as I could, grabbed my flashlight and jumped out to take a look. As my sweet little Amanda began to list to the right, tire hissing, I knew I was in Trouble without many options. There was little to do but hunker down and hope to make it thru the night. With trucks flying by I crawled up in the overhead and tried to sleep.

I have said before that I lead a charmed life and even in circumstances like this I am amazed how the universe looks out for me. In this case help came with a knock on my window at 3:30am and a NC State Trooper who was every inch the stereotypical no-nonsense officer. His first statement after verifying that I was, in fact, broken down: “You can't stay here” (Really??) My first statement, “Where am I?” After providing me with my location as well as the name of a potential tire facility, he left with my promise that I would be out of here as soon as possible. To make a long story short, a call in the morning (8:01am) confirmed the tire company not only had a tire that fit my rig, they were only 15 minutes away. Another $330 and I was back on my way. Thank you to the Universe!

My day continued as I rolled into Wilmington, NC. Pulling up to a stop light, only a few miles from my destination I heard a thwap, thwap and knew right away that I had lost a belt. Peering down from the driver's window small strips of black confirmed my diagnosis. Again, the condensed version: an awesome good Samaritan and a talented mobile mechanic got me back on the road in a few hours. My thanks to all those who helped me out during this trying day! It's very true: We get by with a little help from our friends!

So that's 3 and I'm hoping I'm done with repair issues for a while!! But if I'm not, it's good to know the Universe (and friends) are on my side!

Back in the Land of Automotive

March 7, 2011

There was a time in my youth that I was able to perform a fair amount of work on my vehicles. This came from a combination of boyfriends who worked on cars, and the fact that many of my early vehicles required a certain amount of constant maintenance. I had two VW Bugs which even allowed me to swap out a few fenders along the way. Then came the era of catalytic converters, emissions equipment and my love of manicures. My automotive capabilities fell by the wayside.

My traveling lifestyle has r...

Catching Up

March 1, 2011

I have been quite negligent in posting and am trying to catch up over the next few weeks. The winter blues continued as I left Kentucky and headed for Tennessee. Spent some time in Nashville, including a stint at the parking garage of the Green Hills Mall while attempting some repairs. You know how it is, just like dominoes, first one thing, then another, then another! Nothing to serious or costly in itself, but added up took a toll on my Amazon savings. Oh well, that's how it goes! Nashville...

Wintering in 20ft

December 5, 2010
I have been pretty blessed so far in dealing with weather extremes. Last summer was hot but bearable with the help of ice mats for the kitties, a fan and spritzer bottle, and the occasional ice foot bath. Now I am dealing with the other extreme: 17 degree lows! It is time for payback for all the wonderful sunny KY days. We are forcasted for highs in the 30's and lows in the teens for the next several days. And then there are the intermitant icy snow flurries - I miss my big, fluffy Oregon sno...

Giving Thanks

November 26, 2010
Thanksgiving this year was a bittersweet day. It has always been "the" holiday in our family. The one day when I pulled out all the stops and cooked my *** off! A day when, no matter how tough things got, we were able to take some time to appreciate the many blessings we did have, and hold a thought for those who had so much less. And then we ate. And ate, And then ate a bit more. Many years we would take in a movie to break up the feasting.

November 25th, 2010 I am some 1,500 miles away from ...

A New Adventure

September 13, 2010

I have managed to traverse the better part of 8 states to arrive at my destination of Campbellsville, KY. I’m well settled in a newly developed area reserved for Workampers at the Amazon.com fulfillment center located in this town of 11,000.  I have everything I need and am still delighted every time I enter my little abode. It is nice being settled with everything set up as home vs on the road. Mark, the co-pilot kitty is also enjoying a more stable situation. He has even adjusted to the i...

In Colorado

August 29, 2010
I'm in Frisco, Colorado for a few days, enjoying some of the most beautiful area I have seen. If I ever have to go into the witness protection program, this is where I want to go!

In the past week I have been thru Eastern Oregon, Idaho and Utah (OK, SLC has the MOST bizarre street name system I have ever seen!). Each state has its own majestic beauty and I am constantly amazed at the sheer vastness of this country.  I'll be posting some pictures in the photo gallery shortly.

The drive so far ha...

And We're Off!

August 24, 2010

After several weeks of preparation, we are finally underway!

I have been blessed with so many incredible friends that saying goodbye was much more difficult than I expected. We had a great “Farewell Portland” party, complete with stories old and new, toasts and treats, and even an impromptu quarter collection to fund my upcoming laundry and shower needs! I am now well stocked!

After a tearful day of goodbyes (dear friends, my kids, the grandbaby, favorite spots) and delivering my darli...

Maiden Voyage

July 8, 2010

After several months of local traveling, further downsizing, fine tuning and assuring my friends and family that, yes, I really can live in a 20ft Motorhome, the time has come to make the first long distance trip. Ok, not exactly LONG distance but longer than the 20 mile journeys I have completed so far.

Although several trips had been on the schedule, the unrelenting spring rains of Oregon have kept me pretty much homebound.  There seems no logic to me (at this point) to travel many miles to ...

Ah, Technology!

June 16, 2010

I used to be an early adopter. But then technology began moving faster than my bank account and I became a "let them get the bugs out first" second generation kind of gal. My desktop went by the wayside and a shiny new Gateway laptop took its place. It served me dutifully for over 5 years. I think computers age a bit like dogs, so that makes it almost qualifying for Medicare in computer years.  But after logging more miles than many cars I owned, being schlepped from Starbucks to Starbucks, c...
